A tour of the rivers, lakes, mountains, and apple orchards of Eastern Washington begins and ends in the resort town of Chelan about 40 miles north of Wenatchee.  We are proud of the blue skies, clear waters, and uncrowded roads of our part of the state and are pleased to share this magnificent terrain with you.  We will do a large circle, starting in Chelan, heading for Grand Coulee Dam, the mountain region around Republic, and then a small excursion next to the Canadian border into Oroville and the Okanogan Valley.   From Oroville we take some very lonely roads to the small towns of Conconolly and Twisp, climbing over Loop Loop pass and end our trip by following the river rafters down the wild Methow River before pulling back home to Chelan.  Get away from that rain ..and join us on the sunny side.  Interested in this little adventure ?  … then call or write to sign-up or be placed on our trip information mailing list.

"Details"

Physical & Skill Level Requirements: We will be cycling an average of 77 miles per day through pretty hilly country.  Our easiest day will be 64 miles while our longest day will be 102 miles.  We will be glad to give sag support on that long day as it also entails a considerable amount of climbing.  Obviously, with the amount of mileage that you will encounter on this ride, one should not jump into a tour of this nature without some prior training.  If you have any questions about your ability to ride the tour, feel free to call or write and we can talk it over.

Camping:  Our campsites will range from pretty basic affairs with no showers to fairly luxurious resorts complete with camp stores and swimming pools. I know the thought of a long hard day without a shower is pretty disgusting, but fear not, bring your swim suit as there is a delightful lake to swim in for the one or two places that might not have showers. I'll indicate on the itinerary the two sites that might not have showers.

Equipment:

  • Bike Gear: You will need a road bike in good mechanical condition equipped with low gearing for some of the substantial climbing that we will encounter.  Please have the bike equipped with new tires and a couple of water bottles.  There are few bicycle shops along our route and we carry only the minimum of repair parts and tools.
  • Camping Stuff:  You will need a tent, sleeping bag, and  sleeping pad.  Also bring your personal cooking gear such as sauce pan, plate, cup, & silverware.  Don't bring a stove as we will provide you with that.
  • Clothing:  Even though you are cycling in the clear rain free environment of Eastern Washington, still,  the occasional rain storm does come our way …. Plus we will be cycling over the highest paved road in the state …. So make sure you have foul weather gear.

Food: This trip is predicated on each of you cooking your own meals in camp.  However, because we are located close to restaurants at most of our campsites, you will certainly have the option to partake of the local cuisine.  In fact, it is possible to ride the entire trip without cooking a meal.  But for those of you who want to save a little money or have special  dietary needs, here is how it works.   We will supply each of you with your own food bin.  Each day , we will stop and meet you at a grocery store where you can get what you need.  That means you don't need to carry a whole bunch of food for the trip …. Just buy it one day at a time.  We don't have a refrigerator so that will encourage you to keep your produce purchases to a minimum.  Again …. We provide the cook stoves …. You don't have to bring yours.  For those of you who have not traveled with us before ….the food arrangements might seem a little confusing?  ….. So if you have any questions, feel free to write or call.

Maps:  We will provide whatever maps you will need for the trip.  More than likely, we will simply provide you with a Washington State road map along with a detailed route description …..the usual "turn right at the jct. Of Hwy 10 & 13" etc.   We would love to provide you with detailed topographic maps of the whole route ….but we found in the past only the women bothered to look at them.  On our last trip we had a rider wander mistakenly into Canada on a dirt road ….such was the accuracy of our route description.

Web Sites: Following is a list of various web sites that we feel can help you in providing additional information for planning your trip with us.

Luggage:  Please limit your luggage (...other than your food bin) to one large pack or duffel bag.  We find that when a person shows up with lots of little bags …. Things seem to get misplaced.  Also, would you have a name tag on your stuff so we can divvy up your gear at the end of the trip in the remote chance you become "road kill" or defect to Canada.

Vehicle Support (Sag) :  This is what your support vehicle looks like.  It is in reality a home made RV and is where Sue and I live about 4 months out of the year.  In spite of the ugliness of this vehicle, it has proven to be a reliable work horse that can travel almost any road with the possible exception of a hard 4 wheel track.  It is a 1999 Isuzu NPR with a  4 Cylinder Diesel Engine.  This ugly/lovely beast's primary duty is to carry your gear and get Sue and I to camp before you.  However, we will gladly give you a lift if you are in distress or have bonked.  Rain is not necessarily considered a stressful condition.  Also, that one 102 mile day we are throwing at you is quite a bit more than the average …. So we will be encouraging any rider that wants or needs a lift on that day to jump aboard.

Our Charges and Your Other Expenses:

  • Our Charges:  The charge of $160 pays for planning and organizing this trip, web-site maintenance, telephone, and email/mailing expenses.  We pay for your campsite, haul your gear, provide maps, and act as guides.  We should be able to provide you with parking during the trip as we have a pretty big driveway and parking area by our house.
  • Your Other Expenses:  You pay for everything else such as - transportation to Chelan, food, entertainment, and anything else that we don't cover.
  • Payment Method:  You pay us on the first day of the trip. U.S. Dollars.

Roster:  We'll send out a roster by email as soon as we have a pretty firm idea of who is going.  Sometimes, knowing who is on the roster lets you share equipment, transportation, etc. The roster is usually sent out 2 to 4 weeks before the trip. We generally give everyone's physical address, e-mail address, and phone number.

Sign-Up Limit:  The maximum number of cyclists we can have for this trip is 20 not including Sue and myself.  When you sign up, indicate if you want to be placed on a stand-by list if the trip is full.  For those of you who have never been on one of our trips, we would like to talk to you on the phone somewhere along the line before you are officially accepted.

"Daily Itinerary"

  • June 1 (Sat.)  An Invitation !   Sleeping, Supper, & Breakfast.  For any of you that need a place to stay for the night, we have plenty of room and mattresses but no linen so bring your sleeping bag.  We will also provide dinner starting at 6:30 p.m. and breakfast Sunday morning. If you plan to stay with us or have either dinner or breakfast, please call or write and let us know so we can buy enough food.   Email:  waynesue85@yahoo.com or Phone: 509-682-3568.   We have plenty of parking for your car.

Getting To Our Place.  We live at 917 Park View Rd. within the city limits of Chelan.  Find Safeway Foods in the center of town and then proceed west on Hwy. 150 towards the town of Manson.  Shortly after passing the city park on your left, you will see a sign to the golf course on your right.  Make a hard right turn and go uphill a short way until you turn onto signed Park View Rd.  We are the last house on the left which is the uphill side of the street.  The ride will start here and it will also be the parking spot for your car during the trip unless you have something else in mind.

  • June 2 (Sun.)  78 Miles. -  Assembly in Chelan then ride to Coulee City.  We will meet at our place here in Chelan at 8:00 am, work out last minute details, load the truck, and hopefully be on the road by 9:00 am.  See directions  above to get to our place if you didn't show up yesterday.  Today features the steepest climb of the trip shortly after crossing the Columbia River.  We'll take a lunch break in Waterville and then if the wind gods are kind get blown into our camp in Coulee City.

  • June 3 (Mon.) 83 Miles. -  Coulee City to  Ft. Spokane  The most spectacular features of today's ride are cliff lined Banks Lake and an overlook of Grand Coulee Dam, just about the biggest hunk of concrete you are likely to see anywhere.  At one time it was the largest hydroelectric dam in the world.  Our camp has no showers … but a lovely swimming spot.

  • June 4 (Tues.) 102 Miles -   Ft. Spokane to Republic   A hellaciously long day that features a climb over Sherman Pass at 5,575'.  I'm told  it is the highest paved pass in the state?   Anyway … due to the strenuous nature of today's route, we will be glad to give some of you a ride if you want it.

  • June 5 (Wed.) 72 Miles - Republic to Oroville  From Republic we head north towards the Canadian border.  Just before the border, we'll make a quick left through some of the Okanogan National Forest on roads so lonely, you'll swear that we are lost.  Then into Oroville and our camp on beautiful duck infested Osoyoos Lake.  We are so close to the border, you might be inclined to head for Osoyoos and absorb some Canadian ambiance.

  • June 6 (Thurs.) 76 Miles - Oroville to Conconolly  This should be a great day.  We'll be on back roads almost the whole time winding our way through beautiful canyons filled with lush greens of early summer, next to gorgeous lakes on our way to the delightful isolated community of Conconolly.

  • June 7 (Fri.) 64 Miles - Conconolly to Winthrop  We have a major climb today over Loop Loop Pass, but are rewarded with a screaming descent down to Twisp and the frontier town of Winthrop.

  • June 8 (Sat.) 67 Miles - Winthrop to Chelan   A pleasant ride next to the Methow River down to the Columbia River.  This time of year, we are likely to be cruising with the river rafting crowd as the Methow is a local favorite for the thrill seekers.  After joining the Columbia River we have an easy cruise back to our place here in Chelan.  Anyone too exhausted to drive home is welcome to crash at our place again.
